Lars Sjöswärd started the business in 1988 after seeing how cold his daughter Catherina used to get when riding in winter. Now Mountain Horse is famous world wide for its practical and warm riding clothing.

The focus has always been that the purpose should satisfy a need. Lars and Catherina took charge of the design themselves and in 1988 the three first ground-breaking products were launched: Winter Rider – the world’s first insulated riding boot; Easy Rider – a boot in the shape of a basketball trainer with a riding sole and heel; and Rocky Mountain – a jacket designed specifically for riders with watertight seams, ventilation beneath the yoke and rear riding vents for comfort in the saddle making it warm and comfortable to wear. Mountain Horse SCS3 Quick Release Stirrup Iron

A sturdy stainless steel stirrup which looks like a normal iron but has a rubber release tube integrated into its construction

The tube is held in place by two lugs and is designed to release in the event of a fall. The stirrup has an inbuilt backwards incline to help encourage the rider's foot into a 'heels-down' position and make it easier for the leg to rest in its most effective position. The stirrups are supplied with Mountain Horse's Stirrup Control System 3 Grip treads.

These stirrups are perfectly suited for use with normal riding footwear but the full benefits of the SCS3 system are gained when used with SCS3 boots.

This unique stirrup tread is constructed from two rubber composites. Both layers have shock-absorbing qualities to reduce stress and strain on the joints of the legs, hip and back. The red and black tread is higher at the front to help the heel rest in a natural downwards position. SCS3 treads fit most irons and provide improved grip compared to conventional treads, even when used with non-SCS3 boots.
